Improve from 600 to 800 Elo

Games get longer. Rating rises when you calculate one reply further and stop inventing “clever” moves that leave pieces loose.

Common mistakes at this level

  • Stopping calculation after your own capture
  • Castling into an attack you didn’t notice
  • Ignoring open files for rooks
  • Changing plans every two moves

Habits to fix

  • Force one candidate: if I take, what is their best reply?
  • Before castling, glance at the files and diagonals toward your king
  • Pick a plan for 3–5 moves (improve a piece, fix a pawn, trade attackers)
  • When ahead, simplify into a clear endgame

Daily practice plan

  1. Step 1 · ~10 min

Calculation drill: write their reply before you click

  2. Step 2 · ~15 min

    One 15|10 game with a pre-chosen opening

  3. Step 3 · ~5 min

    Review: one nearly-wrong moment + tomorrow’s habit

Recommended openings

  • Ruy Lopez

Natural piece play and pressure that rewards calm development.

  • French Defense

Teaches locked structures and planning instead of random tactics.

Look one move further

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. O-O Be7 6. Re1 b5 7. Bb3 O-O

Nobody “won” yet — both sides developed. At 600–800, the win often comes later when someone stops asking “and then what?” after a capture.

Honest time estimate

Often 4–8 weeks with consistent review. Blitz-only schedules usually plateau here.
