Improve from 400 to 600 Elo

You’re past total chaos. The next leap is consistency: spot threats before you move, and stop giving away pieces after captures.

Common mistakes at this level

  • Recapturing without looking at checks or double attacks
  • Pushing every pawn and creating holes
  • Leaving pieces unprotected “for one move”
  • Trading into lost endgames because the board looks empty

Habits to fix

  • After every capture sequence: re-count who is safe
  • Name your opponent’s threat before you pick a move
  • Keep a simple development checklist: minors out, castle, connect rooks
  • Prefer safe trades when you’re ahead material

Daily practice plan

  1. Step 1 · ~8 min

Tactics: hanging pieces + one-move threats only

  2. Step 2 · ~12 min

One rapid game — write one sentence after: what almost went wrong

  3. Step 3 · ~5 min

    Replay the turning point slowly

Recommended openings

  • Italian Game

Teaches development and classic attacks without huge theory.

  • Caro-Kann

Solid structure so you can focus on not hanging pieces.

Recapture blindness

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5 4. d3 Nf6 5. Ng5 O-O 6. Nxf7 Rxf7 7. Bxf7+ Kxf7

White sacrificed on f7. Whether it’s sound or not, Black must stay calm: king safety and counting matter more than panic. At this band, slow down after every capture.

Honest time estimate

A month of short daily review is a realistic window for many players. Progress stalls when you only play blitz and never look back.
