How to stop hanging pieces
Most early rating leaks are free pieces. The fix isn’t talent — it’s a boring checklist you run before every move.
Call it a habit, not a character flaw
Leaving a piece unprotected happens to everyone under time pressure. Shame doesn’t fix it. A repeatable scan does.
The 10-second scan
Before you move — and once more after you choose:
- Are any of my pieces unprotected?
- Did their last move attack something new?
- If I capture, can they capture back with check or a double attack?
- Am I moving a defender away from a hanging unit?
Train it on your games
Generic puzzles help a little. Reviewing the exact positions where you left something loose helps a lot. Tag those moments and drill the pattern until the scan is automatic.
Pair with slower games
If every game is bullet, the scan never loads. Use at least some 10+ minute games while the habit forms.
Run the piece-safety scan
- Step 1 · Pause before you move
Give yourself ten seconds — even in rapid.
- Step 2 · Scan unprotected pieces
Ask whether any unit can be taken for free.
- Step 3 · Check their last move
Did they attack something new?
- Step 4 · Verify captures
If you capture, what is their best reply?
Who it suits
Players under ~1200 where free pieces still decide most results — and anyone who “knows better” but still slips.
