French Defense
1.e4 e6 — Black invites a pawn chain fight. If you like counterattacking a big center, the French gives you a map.
The idea in one minute
Support …d5. When White pushes e5, you get a locked chain: attack the base or head of the chain with …c5 and piece pressure, while solving the light-squared bishop problem.
Main plans
Structure first:
- Strike with …c5 against d4
- Pressure e5 when White overextends
- Find a job for the “French bishop” (trade it, fianchetto ideas, or endgames)
- Don’t panic in cramped quarters — improve, then break
Mindset
French games reward patience. If you need open tactics every move, pick a different defense. If you like planning, this opening teaches forever.
