Improve from 1000 to 1200 Elo
Opponents punish loose pieces and planless play. Your edge is a coach notebook: the same leak, fixed until it dies.
Common mistakes at this level
- Tactics you “almost saw” — calculation stops one ply early
- Same opening disaster every week with no post-mortem
- Passive pieces while the opponent grabs space
- Time trouble from calculating the wrong moves first
Habits to fix
- Checks, captures, threats — in that order — before quiet moves
- After each loss: name the habit, not the opening move number
- Improve your worst piece every few moves
- Use a clock habit: decide candidates in 30 seconds, then verify
Daily practice plan
- Step 1 · ~12 min
Spaced tactics from your weak motifs
- Step 2 · ~25 min
One 15|10 game in your main repertoire
- Step 3 · ~10 min
Review + add one line to your personal notebook
Recommended openings
- Italian Game
Plans scale: pawn breaks and piece pressure without encyclopedias.
- King’s Indian ideas (as Black vs 1.d4)
Teaches counterplay and king-side plans — only if you like sharp games.
Candidate moves before calculation
1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 a6
You don’t need a Sicilian encyclopedia. You need a habit: list 2–3 sensible moves, then calculate — instead of falling in love with the first idea.
Honest time estimate
Often 2–4 months of structured practice. Plateau is normal; changing one habit at a time breaks it.
