This band is about survival: see every capture, get your king safe, and finish the game. One habit beats a wall of theory.
Common mistakes at this level
- Moving a piece without checking if it can be taken for free
- Leaving the king in the center forever
- Playing random checks instead of developing pieces
- Resigning after one surprise — or playing on without noticing mate threats
Habits to fix
- Before every move: ask “Is anything hanging?”
- Develop knights and bishops before launching attacks
- Castle (or get the king off the open file) early
- When you can take something safely — take it

Scholar’s Mate works when Black ignores king safety. Your job at this level: see checks, protect f7/f2, and don’t chase cheap mates yourself until your pieces are out.
Honest time estimate
With ~20 focused minutes a day, many players cross 400 in a few weeks. Skipping review slows that down — there is no guaranteed timeline.
