Improve from 1200 to 1400 Elo

Tactics still decide games — but plans decide who gets the tactics. Train patterns you repeat, not random brilliance.

Common mistakes at this level

  • Playing “principled” moves that ignore a concrete tactic
  • Repertoire hopping every week
  • Ignoring weak squares and bad bishops
  • Reviewing with only the evaluation bar

Habits to fix

  • Always verify tactics before a positional idea
  • Keep a tiny repertoire: one reply to 1.e4 and 1.d4 you understand
  • Ask: what is my worst piece, and their worst piece?
  • In review: strength first, then the turning point, then one homework

Daily practice plan

  1. Step 1 · ~15 min

    Tactics + one endgame theme

  2. Step 2 · ~30 min

    Serious game or training match

  3. Step 3 · ~15 min

Coach-style review → one drill for tomorrow

Recommended openings

  • Ruy Lopez

Rewards understanding of structures over memorized traps.

  • Queen’s Gambit

Center control and clear middlegame maps as White.

Worst-piece question

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. O-O Be7 6. Re1 b5 7. Bb3 d6 8. c3 O-O

Both sides look “fine.” Progress here comes from improving the bishop that does nothing and preparing a break — not from inventing a sacrifice.

Honest time estimate

Often a season of play (2–6 months) with weekly honesty about what still repeats. No coach can promise a date.
