Improve from 1400 to 1600 Elo

You already know the basics. Rating moves when you kill recurring mistakes and play openings with real middlegame maps.

Common mistakes at this level

  • Overestimating attacks without counting defenders
  • Learning long opening lines you abandon in the middlegame
  • Skipping endgames because “tactics will save me”
  • Training volume without measuring whether the habit rate drops

Habits to fix

  • Calculate forcing lines to a quiet position, then evaluate
  • Annotate your repertoire with plans, not only moves
  • Schedule weekly endgame technique (rook endings especially)
  • Track one leak metric for two weeks — hanging pieces, time, or conversion

Daily practice plan

  1. Step 1 · ~20 min

    Targeted tactics + calculation sets

  2. Step 2 · ~40 min

Tournament time control or deep training game

  3. Step 3 · ~15 min

Review with habit tags — update your plan

Recommended openings

Plan over novelty

1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Bb4 4. e5 c5 5. a3 Bxc3+ 6. bxc3 Ne7

Winogradsky-type fights are about structure: attack the chain, use the open file, and don’t panic when White looks “spacey.” Memorizing move 14 won’t save a bad habit on move 22.

Honest time estimate

Often several months. Gains are lumpy — measure fewer repeats of your top leak, not day-to-day rating noise.
