Opening lesson
Queen’s Gambit
1.d4 d5 2.c4 — White offers a pawn to pull Black’s center. Whether Black takes or declines, you play for space and harmonious development.
The idea in one minute
Fight for d5 and e4. You develop knights and bishops behind a strong center and choose between calm pressure and sharper isolani structures depending on Black’s setup.
Main plans
Practical White themes:
- Develop Nf3, Nc3, and bishops before forcing fireworks
- Decide whether to recapture toward a classical center or accept an isolated queen pawn fight
- Use the c-file and pressure on d5
- When ahead in development, open the position on purpose
As Black (decline ideas)
You don’t have to grab on c4. Declining keeps a solid foothold — but you still need a plan for development and the …c5 or …e5 break later.
Who it suits
Players moving into 1.d4 who want classical plans that scale past beginner traps.
