Basic checkmates
Winning material means nothing if you can’t mate. These patterns are non-negotiable rating insurance.
Priority order
Learn queen mates, then rook mates. Ladder mates with two rooks build intuition for coordination.
Stalemate warning
Beginners lose half-points by trapping the king with no legal move. Slow down on the last three moves.
Convert a basic mate
- Step 1 · Box the king
Shrink the enemy king’s box with your major piece.
- Step 2 · Bring your king
Your king must help — pieces alone often stalemate.
- Step 3 · Avoid stalemate
Leave a flight square until the final mating move.
- Step 4 · Deliver mate
Use a known pattern (queen face-off or rook ladder).
