Improve from 800 to 1000 Elo

Crossing 1000 is less about genius and more about fewer free gifts in the middlegame — plus finishing won games.

Common mistakes at this level

  • Hanging pieces after a long think (fatigue blindness)
  • Avoiding trades when up material
  • Learning opening moves with no plan after move 8
  • King and pawn endgames played on instinct

Habits to fix

  • Two-pass blunder check: before you move, and after you decide
  • When up a piece or more: trade queens if it kills counterplay
  • For each opening: know the first middlegame idea (break, outpost, or trade)
  • Practice king+pawn and basic rook endings weekly

Daily practice plan

  1. Step 1 · ~10 min

Motif puzzles from your last review (not random rated ladder)

  2. Step 2 · ~20 min

    One serious game

  3. Step 3 · ~10 min

Full review → one habit for tomorrow

Recommended openings

  • Queen’s Gambit

Teaches center tension and developing with purpose as White.

  • Caro-Kann

Reliable Black structure while you stabilize tactics.

Convert instead of invent

1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Bg5 Be7 5. e3 O-O 6. Nf3 Nbd7

Quiet positions punish impatience. If you’re better developed or up material, improve pieces — don’t force fireworks that re-open the game.

Honest time estimate

Commonly 1–3 months if you review games. Claiming a fixed Elo gain date would be dishonest.
