Opening lesson

Scandinavian Defense

1.e4 d5 — Black challenges the center immediately. The queen often comes out early; your job is to retreat with purpose and finish developing.

The idea in one minute

Force White to decide the center on move two. After the common queen trade-offs or retreats, you aim for solid development and pressure on open files — not a random queen tour.

Main plans

Keep it practical:

  • Know a calm retreat square for the queen and stick to it
  • Develop minor pieces toward the center
  • Castle short unless you have a concrete reason not to
  • Use the open d-file and light-square pressure when available

Common pitfall

Falling in love with checks. Early checks that lose time hand White a lead in development. Trade only when it helps your structure or safety.

Who it suits

Beginners who want one clear answer to 1.e4 and hate drowning in e5 theory.
