Opening lesson

Italian Game

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 — a teaching opening. You develop, castle, and fight for the center with ideas you can reuse for years.

Italian starting tabiya. Both sides developed toward the center. White’s next jobs: castle and decide between quiet d3 or a later d4 break.

The idea in one minute

Aim your bishop at the soft f7 square, get castled, and decide between quiet Giuoco Piano play or sharper knight jumps once you’re developed. You’re not memorizing twenty moves — you’re learning how pieces cooperate.

Main plans

Typical themes you’ll see again and again:

  • Castle early and connect rooks
  • c3 and d4 (or d3 first) to build a strong center
  • Watch f7/f2 — both sides’ weakest points early
  • If the center locks, improve pieces before inventing tactics

Typical middlegame habits

Don’t chase Scholar’s Mate forever. Once Black develops calmly, switch to pressure on the center and piece activity. After trades, ask which bishop is bad — and fix it.
