Endgame theme

Rook endgames basics

Rook endings are common and drawish only if you’re passive. Activity is the first principle.

The idea in one minute

An active rook beating pawns from behind or checking the king from afar often holds or wins against “extra” pawns on paper.

Rules of thumb

Practical habits:

  • Rooks belong behind passed pawns
  • Cut off the enemy king when you can
  • Don’t trade into a lost king+pawn ending blindly

Who it suits

Club players aiming at 1200–1600 conversion skills.
